Monday July 31st 

  1. MIT builds wearable ultrasound scanner. Researchers at MIT have developed an early detection system for breast cancer. This device uses ultrasound to monitor breast tissue and can even be used at home.
  2. FDA approves ProStyle and ProGlide devices. This device developed by Abbott Vascular is a device that sutures openings in blood vessels during catheterization procedures. The devices can be used to close multiple openings on femoral veins.
  3. Robotic Surgery to be scheduled by Vicarious Surgical for first time. Vicarious Surgical is looking to challenge the dominance of Intuitive Surgical by introducing their own robotic surgical devices. The device is scheduled to perform a ventral hernia repair in 2024

Tuesday August 1st

  1. AI had most patents filed in device industry in Q2. From March 31st to June 20th this year, 8,476 patents in total were filed in AI. This new trend shows where companies are focusing when it comes to new development
  2. Foldax treats first patient in clinical trial in India with new heart valve. The company made the announcement on July 31st. The device is their new Tria polymer surgical mitral heart valve and uses their proprietary LifePolymer.
  3. Trifecta heart valve replacements being pulled from market. Abbot announced that they will be withdrawing the family of devices from the US market due to the deterioration rate. The valves are intended to treat aortic heart valves that are either malfunctioning or have been damaged.

Wednesday August 2nd

  1. Artificial muscle able to change stiffness with voltage influence. At Queen Mary University in England, scientists have developed an artificial muscle that is able to transition from soft to hard similar to a natural muscle. In addition it is able to have similar flexibility and stretchability.
  2. New deal learning app able to automate heart disease screening. This new app was developed by researchers at Yale University and is able to screen for left ventricular systolic dysfunction. The AI-base technology screens ECG images and interprets them to detect the disorder.
  3. Chinese-based molecular chip company is able to raise $13.9 million in financing. The company, Atantares, was able to secure this amount in their pre-Series A and A+ financing rounds. The chips can be used to identify and synthetically make DNA, RNA, and proteins at lower costs.

Thursday August 3rd

  1. Wearable and implantable devices powered by using energy harvesting technologies. These technologies can use the power our bodies use to keep them operating. The technologies include a smart necklace that reads glucose and a wireless sensor that monitors for aneurysms.
  2. Eyenovia has its first commercial sale of Mydcombi eye treatment device. The device delivers a mixed spray for pupil dilation. The device is great for use where short-term pupil dilation is desired.
  3. Body Vision Medical strikes agreement with distributors. The company struck an agreement with 3 different distributors for their LungVision AI imaging system. This allows their device to hit markets in Romania, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Macao, and the Greater Bay Area.

Friday August 4th

  1. Improved technique developed by above-elbow amputees. This technique developed by researchers at Chalmers University of Technology allows patients with more limited muscles to have fine motor control or features such as prosthetic fingers. This is addressed by reconfiguring peripheral nerves.
  2. Biosense Webster received approval from FDA for cardiac ablation devices. Johnson and Johnson’s subsidiary had devices approved such as their ThermoCool SmartTouch SF catheter. These devices offer an alternative to fluoroscopy.
  3. Clinical trials to begin for Femasys birth control device. This device permanently closes the fallopian tubes and prevents the patient from getting pregnant. The devices is non-surgical and non-implanted and is delivered in office.
